FAQ

CryptoPets Basics

What are CryptoPets?

CryptoPets are digital creatures that you can adopt, train, battle, trade, and play games with. The magic behind CryptoPets is that all the in-game characters (aka CryptoPets) are blockchain-based non-fungible assets (NFTs), meaning each pet is unique, provably rare, and owned by you. Each CryptoPet has a unique genetic code that is recorded on a blockchain and is interpreted by the application. In-game events can update the dynamic traits of your CryptoPet altering its state over time and keeping an unchangeable record of your achievements and upgrades.

Ok, then what is CryptoPets..but like the game/company?

The current CryptoPets application is the cornerstone of our first game series in the CryptoPets franchise. The first release in this series is Duelmaster, an online turn-based battle game that pits CryptoPets against one another. Duelmaster is currently in Early Access, so expect frequent updates from the development team! Later releases in this series will transform these initial game assets into characters that can be taken into competitive multiplayer online-battle arena style games and offer many new ways to play.

Does it cost money to play CryptoPets?

Yes, but only to buy your initial pets. To play CryptoPets you must purchase the pets you want using Ether (ETH) and then every game thereafter is free to play. Common pets start as low as the equivalent of $5 paid in ETH. Buying just one CryptoPet grants you access to all our future games and content as well, although some modes might require more than one pet.

CryptoPets Marketplace and Exchange.

CryptoPets bought in the Marketplace are released by the CryptoPets team at level 1. Players can upgrade their pets through gameplay. Players can monetize their gameplay, level upgrades, and achievements by selling their pet in the Exchange for a higher price than they purchased it for, but only if other players are willing to buy them. The Exchange is a player to player marketplace to sell experienced pets between users. However, it does cost a small transaction fee called “Gas” to list items on the Exchange, so choose your transactions wisely.

Is there an ICO?

We do not plan to launch an ICO. Elements of the game will be tokenized in the future like experience points, food, currency, and other in-game resources. We will be converting Experience Points (XP) earned in-game during the Early Access period into ERC20 tokens that will be airdropped to CryptoPets holders when the token has been minted.

When is the main CryptoPets launch?

The Early Access period on the Main Ethereum network for the first CryptoPets game starts August 1st. Future games and modes will be launched later this year.

Digital Creatures across “Infinite Virtual Worlds”? How?

Purchasing your CryptoPet is the entry ticket to an ever-expanding universe of games that you can move between as easily as switching internet browser tabs. Even in new games, your CryptoPets will maintain their rarity, experience, and awards earned from gameplay. We will be launching more CryptoPets games, modes, and maps to make the user experience as fun and rewarding as possible.

Is there a roadmap of expected features / timeline?

A roadmap of our expected features is in development and will be released prior to the main launch. You can find it on our website and Medium page.

Why should I care?
  1. CryptoPets is the first blockchain-based video game to combine ERC-721 assets (NFTs) with a 3D online player-versus-player battle video game.
  2. Players can monetize their gameplay, achievements, and level upgrades by selling their CryptoPets on the Exchange, where these assets can be sold for Ether (ETH).
  3. Experience Points earned by the player from CryptoPets battles will be redeemable for an ERC20 token, that will be airdropped once the token is minted.
  4. CryptoPets will be implementing mutation functions that allow for the creation of unique one-of-a-kind assets by players using the ERC998 token framework.
  5. All CryptoPets purchased will be playable within future CryptoPets video games and modes launched by the development team, each acting as a ticket into our game universe.
  6. CryptoPets are provably rare, scarce, and unique assets meaning that no one in the world has the same CryptoPet as you. They will grow in value as our ecosystem develops with more tokens, games, and franchises.

Payment

Can I pay with a Credit or Debit Card?

Not yet. You need to buy Ethereum to play. Here’s how:

  1. Buy Ether (ETH): Coinbase is the most reputable and easiest for beginners.
  2. Install the MetaMask Browser Extension (Google Chrome | Mozilla FireFox | Brave)
  3. Transfer ETH to MetaMask (Explainer Video)
  4. That's it! Once MetaMask is installed, you're ready to buy and play!
Do you take my currency? Like USD?

We currently only accept Ether (ETH) and do not accept Fiat currencies like US dollars or Euros for our transactions. Opening this avenue for payment is a work in progress.

About Pets

How many pets are there?

It’s necessary to have market scarcity in order to protect the value of a players’ purchase. We aim to limit the total supply based on daily active users. There should always be CryptoPets available to purchase in the Marketplace, but in total there will be very few.

How often are new pets emitted?

New pets are emitted daily. The type, variation, and rarity of pets emitted are randomly determined.

How many new pets are emitted?

While there is a guaranteed amount of pets emitted per day, it varies based on active players.

What are the different “Types”?

Occasionally, there will be new types added to the marketplace. But there is no official interval for new arrivals to the world. We plan to have dozens of new types added to the game.

What are the different Rarities?

CryptoPets are subdivided across six different rarity classes—Common, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond.

How does Rarity affect the gamer’s experience?

Rarity impacts in-game statistics at an increasing rate as the pet levels. Rare pets are significantly harder to maintain but can have a critical edge in certain competitions when trained to high levels. Rare pets come with unique aesthetics as well.

What can I do with my CryptoPet once I have it?

CryptoPets can be immediately put to use in the battle minigame. Expect constant rollouts of new minigames from the development team. All of your successes can be put to use to make your pet stronger and improve your skills as a player.

Rewards

When do I get my Free Pets:

You'll be getting your free packs as we launch to the Mainnet. Expect this to be after time has passed with the beta and changes have been implemented. You can follow our developer log to stay up-to-date on the latest with the CryptoPets team development. As the Mainnet game launches, we will transfer your pets to you.

Is there a bounty program?

We will be pushing details out over Medium. Please check there for updates.

How does the Referral Program Work

See this article for an explanation. Disclaimer: The referral program is not live yet but will be available on the CryptoPets website shortly and this article will reflect those updates.

Rewards for Participating in the Early-Access:

For having at least 5 level 75 or higher pets while Early Access is active, you can earn the HARDENED achievement. HARDENED grants you one gold pet and one double 24-hour experience bonus in-game. If you're feeling a little bit more up to the game, shoot for the VETERAN achievement (have at least 8 pets level 90 or higher), earning you one platinum pet and one triple 24-hour Experience Point bonus.

Rewards for Providing Early Access Feedback

Everyone gets a chance to earn a Double 24 Hr XP bonus by providing constructive feedback to the team. Your responses are very informative to our development, let us help you have the best experience possible. If you’ve already responded, use the Telegram or Discord chat to connect with the team.

Checking Your Rewards

You’ll be able to check your active rewards from the CryptoPets account page. From here you should be able to check your active progress. As long as you have entered into the program and are actively participating, you should be able to see which rewards you are eligible for and which you have yet to receive. You should also see which rewards you have assigned to your address. This page is undergoing development.

Backend Technology

What is a blockchain?

A blockchain is a fancy database that keeps a permanent and unchangeable record of all data transfer on it. This data is secured by a global network of computers that earn a fee for lending their computer’s resources to confirm new transactions. On the Ethereum blockchain, that “fee” is known as Ether (ETH).

What is “Gas” on Ethereum and why is it required?

When submitting a transaction on the Ethereum blockchain users must pay a fee to the “miners” who run the network. The higher the gas price the more likely a “miner” will accept the transaction and process it quickly. The lower the gas price, the less likely your transaction will process and it may not confirm at all. We recommend all users to pay close attention to the cost of gas before submitting a transaction because setting it too low risks wasting your "gas" and setting it too high can be expensive.

What blockchain are CryptoPets based on?

CryptoPets are ERC-721 non-fungible tokens (NFTs) built on Ethereum. Ethereum is the blockchain of choice for many decentralized applications (dApps) as well as token developers because it is widely used and has a large development community.

What are non-fungible tokens (NFTs)?

The ERC-721 framework allows tokens built on Ethereum to be NFTs. NFTs are uniquely generated assets that have assigned and unique properties. Each one is generated with a unique ID hash that contains identifying data no other token has.

How are pets generated?

Smart contracts generate each pet with a unique hash that dictates their characteristics.

How are pets emitted to the marketplace?

Pets are emitted to the marketplace based on total player activity within the CryptoPets system.

What makes pets unique?

Each asset is generated with a unique genetic code. It’s possible to interpret these genes differently across multiple games allowing unique game experiences.

Is CryptoPets playable on mobile yet?

While the in-game assets are playable on mobile, it’s currently necessary to have the MetaMask integration to play. In the future, your tokens can be stored on a mobile browser like Toshi and in 3rd party wallets.

Are there any Integrations with other decentralized applications?

3rd party dApp integrations are a work in progress. We are strongly considering pulling other non-fungible tokens into our game as well as allowing for our assets to be played within other games.

Does the platform scale?

We are actively working to pilot generalized state channel payments for transaction volume scaling and plasma side chains for game volume. CryptoPets currently runs on top of a balanced legacy system / blockchain-based backend to ensure that only the necessary components are on-chain to limit the cost of “gas” (i.e network transaction fees).
